UX case study · Faircode Technologies

KSEB: every electricity service in Kerala, a few taps away.

With Faircode Technologies, I worked on the UI/UX of the official KSEB mobile app for Android and iOS: one self-service app where any consumer can pay a bill in under a minute, track usage and manage every connection, with or without an account.

01

The challenge

KSEB Limited serves millions of electricity consumers across Kerala. Paying a bill often meant a trip to an office or a third-party portal. Bills, consumption and payment history sat in separate places. Homes and businesses with several consumer numbers had no single view. And most consumers are on a phone, expecting the same experience on Android and iOS.

02

Research

What we learned

  • Consumers wanted to pay in seconds, with or without an account.
  • Many people manage several connections at once: home, shop, farm.
  • Trust depends on clear bills, instant receipts and payment confirmations.
  • At state scale the app has to work across a huge range of devices.

How we responded

  1. Lead with Quick Pay: settle a bill in under a minute, no login.
  2. Give registered users a personal My Account.
  3. Let one account manage up to 30 consumer numbers.
  4. Put 24 months of bills, usage and payments a tap away.
  5. Ship one consistent experience on Android and iOS.

Research run with the Faircode team.

03

Goals

01

Pay without signing up

Quick Pay needs only the 13-digit consumer number and the registered mobile number, confirmed with an OTP.

02

Every service on one screen

A single grid on the home screen holds payments, complaints, new connections and doorstep services.

03

One login, up to 30 connections

Registered users add, switch between and pay for up to 30 consumer numbers.

04

History at a glance

24 months of bills, consumption and payments, with a 3, 6, 12 or 24 month filter and PDF downloads.

Design decisions

01

A welcome that offers a way in

The first screen gives three clear paths: create an account, log in, or carry on as a guest. Nobody is forced to sign up to pay.

02

A home screen that is a menu

A friendly greeting card on top, the four most used services as large green circles, and every other service in a calm lavender grid below.

03

Quick Pay, two fields

A guest pays with just two fields and one button. A simple illustration tells people they are in the right place.

04

The bill comes first

Once signed in, the consumer card shows the amount due before anything else, with the same grid of services under it.

05

History you can read

Tabs for payment and transaction history, a month filter and large amounts make past payments easy to check.

06

A short, useful menu

Who you are, log in, find your section or consumer number, help and language. Nothing else competes for attention.
